John Joyce

Hi, my name is John Joyce. I am currently a senior in Robotics and Mechatronics at Virginia Tech preparing for my master’s degree in mechanical engineering. I began my journey just like many of you. I was tutored by this team for 3 years and happy to now be able to give back and help future students succeed in their careers. I have always been a firm believer that students learn better when working together and talking themselves through a problem. Even now when I am stuck on a problem, I find that it is easier to solve when I say out loud the steps I am taking.

I decided to become a tutor, because it was such a rewarding and beneficial experience for myself. If it hadn’t been for my tutors, I would not have been able to do as well in my classes as I did. I want to be able to help other students achieve their goals and become the best students they can be.

I currently work in a lab on campus as a research assistant to Dr. Michael Bartlett to create soft robotics and electronics. I work on drone technologies to make them more adaptable to their surrounding environments and to make them lighter overall. I am also currently working on a device for the lab that will allow for specialized testing of underwater electronics and adhesives in submerged settings.

Outside of the classroom I do a variety of activities. I am an outdoor enthusiast, gym goer, martial artist, and pet lover (please show me your pets). In my free time I also love to play games with my roommates and friends, while we chow down on some fresh baked treats.
