Alvin Aung

My name is Alvin and I am a second-year graduate student at Virginia Tech in the mechanical engineering department. I have been a tutor since I was in high school, mentoring students from K-12th grade back home in New York City. I covered a variety of topics in math and science while also preparing aspiring college students for the SAT and ACT. Mainly a STEM teacher, my focus was on AP Calculus (AB and BC) and AP Physics for high school students. I enjoy tackling tough problems with students and building meaningful connections with them during the process!

As a tutor, I aim to help students gain an appreciation for the subject rather than just learn how to solve problem sets. Understanding the “why” is more important than the “how.” If there is one takeaway in any tutoring session then that is my goal. There is no greater feeling as a tutor than seeing a student’s eyes light up over their epiphany on a topic.

I am a firm believer in practicing what I preach – that is why I am a student to the many joys of life in addition to being a teacher. Since my tutoring days in NYC four years ago, I have taken up other part-time jobs such as working in the dining hall at VT, grading for the ME course Fluid Dynamics, and interning at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In my free time, my hobbies include baking, exercising, performing card magic, and tarot reading. I also enjoy discussing films, philosophy, and books just to name a few.
